EU, the next budget "divides" members - 14 countries oppose the centralization of funds
Fourteen EU member states oppose the European Commission's plans for the next budget, saying the reform centralizes the management and distribution of the bloc's funds.
As the European Union is expected to propose its next budget after 2027, the political landscape remains turbulent. Fourteen member states have opposed the European Commission's plans to centralize the management and distribution of the bloc's funds.
"Only a clear and robust budget, as well as a region-based distribution methodology, reflecting their different levels of development, together with specific legislation dedicated to Cohesion Policy, can ensure that the next Multiannual Financial Framework delivers unity, competitiveness and long-term convergence across all EU regions," the document states.
The 14 countries, including Greece, Spain, Hungary, Italy and Portugal, signed the document, aiming for a special fund to narrow the socio-economic gap between the richest and poorest European regions.
The call from more than half of the member states comes after a leak of information about the Commission's plans to create a single funding pool for each EU country (covering around 530 programs) and to link receipt of funds to the fulfillment of objectives.
The potential centralization of management and access to EU money would give more power to national governments and Brussels, while proving detrimental to regions and other departments within the European Commission.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is expected to present her budget proposal for the long-term financial period 2028-2034 on July 16, but criticism from regions, member states and MEPs continues to mount. Many politicians are also calling on the Commission head to propose a larger and more ambitious long-term budget, exceeding 1% of the EU's current GDP, or €1.2 trillion.
