Kosovo farmers protest over wheat prices - "They don't want our

Dozens of Kosovar farmers, wheat producers, have protested in Pristina. The reason for the protest is the low price, only 17-18 cents per kilogram of wheat, which, according to them, has been set by flour factories that are the main buyers of their production. According to the protesters, this is related to the import of "old wheat" from Serbia, which negatively affects the domestic market.

Data from Kosovo Customs confirms that Serbia is one of the main countries from which wheat is imported into Kosovo. In the period January-May of this year, wheat worth around 7.9 million euros was imported. The majority – over 7.2 million euros – was imported from Serbia, while the rest came from Hungary and Croatia.

Kosovo does not have a wheat exchange, so flour mills rely on regional prices to purchase the product. According to the flour mills association, the price for 1 ton of wheat in the region is lower than in Kosovo, so they are also encouraged to import.

The price of wheat is determined mainly by its quality, which is closely related to its purity. According to the association, it often happens that the wheat of Kosovar farmers is not pure, this is because many combine harvesters are outdated.

According to previous reports, Kosovo needs about 400,000 tons of wheat per year, but domestic production covers just over 60 percent of this amount. Wheat, as a raw material for flour production, is considered a strategic product for Kosovo's national security.
