9 out of 10 bankers earn at least 1 million euros/year - European Banking Authority Report: The highest paid, mainly men

Europe’s highest-paid bankers remain overwhelmingly male, despite a growing group of people earning millions of euros, a report from the European Banking Authority showed. Almost nine out of 10 bank employees earning at least 1 million euros a year were men, the EBA said. The imbalance was even more pronounced at investment firms, where 97% of the top earners were men.
The findings highlight the slow pace of change in gender balance across the financial sector, echoing previous warnings from the EBA that progress at senior levels remained limited.
The number of high-net-worth employees at banks and investment firms rose 9% to 2,554, supported by strong profitability from higher interest rates, strong trading in volatile markets and a recovery in dealmaking.
But the growth did little to shift entrenched inequalities. In credit institutions, such as banks, men made up just over 89% of those with seven-figure incomes, largely unchanged from previous years. Investment firms showed an even wider gap, despite a significant increase in the number of top earners.
The European Banking Authority said achieving gender balance, particularly in senior and higher-paid roles, remained a priority for regulators and firms across Europe's financial system.
