39 dead in Spain train crash - 75 passengers hospitalized, 15 in critical

At least 39 people have died in a high-speed train crash in southern Spain and rescue efforts are ongoing. The crash happened when the rear of a train traveling between Malaga and Madrid with about 300 passengers on board derailed near Cordoba at 7:45 p.m. Sunday.

It collided with a train travelling from Madrid to Huelva, another southern Spanish city. 75 passengers were hospitalised, 15 of them in serious condition.

The Spanish Red Cross set up an aid center in the town of Adamuz, near the crash site, offering assistance to emergency services and people seeking information.

Passengers reported escaping through broken windows, with some using emergency hammers to break the windows.

Spain's Transport Minister said early Monday that the cause of the accident was unknown. He called it a "really strange" incident because it happened on a flat section of runway that had been renovated in May.

He also said the train that derailed was less than four years old. The rear of the first train derailed and collided with the front of the other train, sending the first two cars off the tracks and down a 13-foot slope.

Spain leads Europe in high-speed trains. According to the European Union, Spain has the largest high-speed rail network in Europe for trains that travel at speeds over 250 km/h, with more than 3,100 kilometers of track.

The network is a popular, competitively priced and safe mode of transport. Renfe said more than 25 million passengers will take one of its high-speed trains by 2024.

Spain's worst rail accident this century occurred in 2013, when 80 people died after a train derailed in the country's northwest. An investigation concluded that the train was traveling at 179 km/h on a section with a speed limit of 80 km/h when it derailed.
