On its 20th birthday, YouTube is a far cry from the simple video platform for amateur users posting their own low-budget clips. With 2.7 billion users, YouTube has become the most popular way for Americans to watch television and is expected to surpass industry leader Disney's media revenue this year.
The Alphabet-owned platform's executives have laid out their vision for how YouTube will dominate screens in the coming decades, with the help of artificial intelligence. During the event, the platform promoted video creators and emphasized that they are the future of media, as they can now work without the constraints imposed by traditional executives. They will be helped by a number of AI-powered tools that will reshape the production process or create entirely new content, a concept that Hollywood opposed during the long strike in 2023.
Official sources dismissed the idea that innovative technology will replace jobs in the sector. “These are just tools and nothing more,” they said. “No studio, TV network, technology company or artificial intelligence tool will own the future of the industry.” Creating videos on YouTube should be seen as a “sustainable, respectable and reliable career path” as technology will become increasingly important in the creative process over the next 20 years, they said.
With Google’s financial backing, YouTube has widened its lead over Disney, which dominated the market for most of 2024. In July, YouTube accounted for 13.4% of U.S. viewership, while Disney’s 9.4%. Analysts predict that the platform’s revenue this year will surpass that of Disney, which earned nearly $60 billion from media last year.
