Ukraine, arms production with the US and Germany - Kiev seeks support from partners to expand domestic industry
Ukraine has asked Western partners for support in expanding its domestic arms industry. Germany and the United States have offered concrete plans for joint production of military equipment.
German arms company Rheinmetall plans to produce artillery shells for the Ukrainian armed forces at a new factory in Ukraine. The news was announced by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense. "A plot of land in a safe region of Ukraine was allocated for the construction of a new factory and the production of Rheinmetall shells," sources from the ministry explained.
Kiev is asking Western partners for support to expand its domestic arms industry to defeat Russian forces. The Russian occupation of Ukraine has been ongoing for more than three years.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced that he had discussed with US officials the possibilities of developing joint weapons production and the imposition of further sanctions against Russia by Washington.
"We discussed various ways of cooperation, how to achieve real peace and ensure the security of Ukraine," Zelenskiy wrote after the meeting in Kiev.
Part of the talks were "strong bilateral agreements on joint production of drones and weapons, which we have proposed to the US. We expect a positive response from the United States," the Ukrainian leader added.
Rheinmetall is one of the largest manufacturers of military equipment in Europe and has been a key supplier to Ukraine since the start of the Russian aggression in 2022. The company has helped with shipments of ammunition, armored vehicles, and modern weapons systems to bolster Kiev's defenses.
