Ukraine opens tender for lithium exploitation - Project aims to attract US investment and boost domestic production
Ukraine has opened a tender for the right to exploit a lithium deposit in the central Kirovohrad region, Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko announced.
The tender for the "Dobra" field is expected to be the first project under a joint investment fund with the United States, signed in April, as part of Kiev's efforts to maintain Washington's support in the fight against Russian occupying forces.
The partnership, promoted by US President Donald Trump, gives the US preferential access to new deals for Ukrainian minerals and funds for the country's reconstruction.
"The area contains significant lithium reserves, which are of strategic importance for energy and technology. We are looking for an investor to ensure not only extraction, but also the development of value-added production within Ukraine," Svyrydenko wrote on the Telegram app.
She added that the official announcement will be published within the next two months, followed by a three-month period for accepting bids, and then a decision on the winner will be made.
Ukraine's Economy Ministry stated on its website that the winner of the tender will sign a 50-year agreement and commit to investing at least $179 million.
"This amount includes both financing for geological exploration, as well as the launch of production and enrichment. In addition, the agreement provides for compliance with environmental standards, the use of local goods and labor, as well as investments in the development of local communities," the statement said.
