Greece needs 2 million workers by 2035 - Aging population and economic growth

Greece needs more than two million workers by 2035, according to a European study that highlights the dual challenge and opportunity facing the country's economy.

The demand comes as a result of mass retirements and the creation of new jobs, where 646,000 positions will require high specialization. Experts warn that labor shortages, if not addressed, could slow economic growth. They call for policies that encourage the participation of women and older workers. Also, a priority is to attract emigrants who want to return.

“The coexistence of vacancies and unemployment means underutilized Gross Domestic Product,” sources within the Ministry of Labor said. Filling these jobs could boost incomes, consumption, productivity and exports, as well as ease pressure on public finances and the pension system.

Although unemployment is falling, shortages affect all sectors and skill levels. This problem reflects “deeper inequalities in human capital, such as skills shortages, an aging population and skills mismatches.” Business representatives estimate that the real need for workers could be as much as 200,000 more than the official figures report.

The European Centre for the Development of Vocational Skills predicts 646,000 jobs requiring high skills in Greece during the period 2025–2035. Many of these are technology-related, including data scientists, artificial intelligence ethics experts, automation technicians and software engineers.

Other sectors that will require workers include personal services with 337,000, 122,000 in education, 119,000 in health professions and 56,000 in personal care. Training, retraining and wider participation in the labor market will be crucial for the performance of the Greek economy.
