Trump promises trade deal with EU - US leader and Italian Prime Minister Meloni discuss tariffs
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with Donald Trump at the White House, where the US president stressed the very good relationship between Italy and the US. He also declared that "there will be a trade agreement, 100%", regarding the tariffs that "affect" Europe. Trump even underlined that "it will be a fair deal".
Answering questions from reporters before the start of lunch with Meloni, Trump said trade negotiations with other countries were "going very well" but insisted the US was "in no rush" to conclude the talks.
"The United States has been deceived... This will not happen again, but we will make fair deals," he said. The American leader also stressed that he would make "a very good deal" with China. Trump praised Meloni, saying she is "a great prime minister" and "doing a fantastic job in Italy."
"We are very proud of her. I knew her from the beginning. I knew she had great talent. She is one of the true leaders of the world. And I am very proud to be with her," he said. Responding to his comments, Meloni expressed his belief that the EU would reach a deal on tariffs and invite Trump to come to Italy.
The Italian prime minister is the first European leader to meet with Donald Trump since he imposed 20% tariffs on European Union goods. Both sides have now suspended the tariffs for 90 days.
She said she is "aware of what she represents and what she defends" ahead of the meeting, during which she will try to convince Trump of the advantages of a "zero-to-zero" deal with the EU.
Some in Europe hope that Meloni's close relationship with Trump could help resolve the situation. But some warn that the meeting could break European unity, as Trump's strategy with "bilateral talks" is to "divide Europeans."
