Energy purchases "reduce" tariffs - Trump's strategy

Asian governments are looking to buy more American oil and gas as they try to reduce their trade surpluses with Washington. The countries hope this will help ease the burden of tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

Many Asian countries have large trade surpluses with the United States and are also large energy importers.

But what measures are these countries planning to purchase American oil and gas?

INDONESIA

Indonesia will propose increasing imports of crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from the United States by about $10 billion as part of tariff negotiations.

The Ministry of Energy recommended increasing the LPG import quota for the US, as well as importing more US crude oil, to help achieve the target.

Pakistan

Pakistan is considering importing crude oil from the United States for the first time to offset a trade imbalance that prompted higher tariffs from the US, according to government sources.

The refinery's executive director said the aim is to purchase US crude oil equivalent to Pakistan's current imports of fuel and refined products, or about $1 billion worth of oil.

INDIA

India is considering a proposal to remove import duty on US liquefied natural gas (LNG) to boost purchases and help reduce its trade surplus with Washington, four government and industry sources said.

New Delhi also plans to remove taxes on imports of US ethane and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

The country's largest LNG importer, GAIL India Ltd, has opened a tender to acquire up to 26% stake in an LNG project in the United States, combined with a 15-year gas import agreement.

THAILAND

Thailand said it plans to import more US LNG and ethane over the next five years.

In addition to an existing plan to import 1 million metric tons per year of LNG worth $500 million next year, as part of a 15-year plan totaling 15 million tons, Thailand plans another contract for more than 1 million tons of US LNG over the next five years.

The country also plans to import 400,000 tons of US ethane worth $100 million over the next four years, the finance minister said.

ALASKA LNG

Trump wants Japan, South Korea and Taiwan to join the $44 billion natural gas export project in Alaska, part of Washington's push for trade and tariffs.

The project aims to transport gas south from far northern Alaska via a $44 billion, 1,300 km pipeline, to be transported as LNG to Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, bypassing the Panama Canal.
