Greece, 10-15 satellites in space in two years - Aims to reduce dependence on other countries in this sector
Around 10 to 15 Greek satellites are expected to be launched into orbit over the next two years by the Ministry of Digital Governance, in collaboration with the Hellenic Space Center. These satellites are being developed by Greek companies that have benefited from government incentives and have established operations within the country.
"Three companies have already opened offices in Greece, one German, one Finnish and another active in Spain and the United Kingdom," say sources from the Ministry of Digital Governance.
"They have hired Greek engineers, many of whom have returned from large international firms. Also, the firms are working closely with local space companies and within a few months we expect to see the first satellites built in Greece," the ministry announced.
A new provision will assign the Hellenic Space Centre responsibility for managing all satellite data procurement across all ministries and public sector agencies. The aim is to improve coordination and significantly reduce duplication of spending.
Regarding the development and deployment of Greek satellites, an application has been submitted to the International Telecommunication Union, the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies. This initiative is expected to generate significant cost savings for the Greek state and unlock new investment opportunities, while laying the foundation for the expansion of Greece's space science ecosystem.
"It is unfortunate that we train our engineers, through postgraduate and doctoral programs, equipping them with expertise in advanced fields, only to see them leave the country," say sources from the ministry.
They also emphasize the growing importance of space data and systems in everyday life, both for citizens and for the functioning of the state. All ministries and public organizations rely on satellite data in various ways. For example, finding the location on the phone or synchronizing banking systems are made possible thanks to satellites.
By launching domestically built satellites, Greece could reduce its dependence on foreign data sources by up to 80%.
