Protection for damaged property of on-duty officers - The Government compensates up to 1 million lek for police officers
The Council of Ministers has approved a new decision that defines the criteria and procedures for granting immediate financial compensation to State Police employees in the event of serious property damage due to duty. According to the decision, officers will benefit up to 1 million lekë if their property is damaged for reasons directly related to the performance of their duties.
Compensation is applied in two cases: when the damage occurs as a result of a criminal offense committed in the course of duty and the case has been referred to the prosecutor's office, or when the property is accidentally damaged during use for official purposes. The condition for benefit is that the employee possesses a title deed or a document for the legalization process and has not previously benefited from insurance compensation.
The decision provides for the establishment of a five-member commission within the State Police, which will assess within 10 days the compliance of the documentation with the legal criteria and propose the decision for payment. The Director General of Police is the authority that issues the final order for the reward.
In case of refusal of compensation, the employee has the right to appeal the decision to the Director of the Police, while if it is later proven that the damage was not related to the duty, the compensation must be returned at 100%. The decision repeals the previous act of 2017 and the financial effects will be covered by the budget of the State Police. This new regulation enters into force immediately after publication in the Official Gazette.
