Battery-powered train sets world record - Travels 322 km on a single charge,

A battery-electric train has set a new world record for the longest journey on a single charge, covering around 322 kilometres (200 miles) between Reading, London and Oxford.

According to Great Western Railway (GWR), this achievement shows that battery trains could be a viable and more economical alternative to diesel trains in the future.

"We not only broke the existing record of 139 miles. We actually reached an incredible 200 miles, which coincides nicely with the railway's 200th anniversary celebrations," said company spokesman Paul Gentleman.

The record was achieved operating in 'SuperMode' – at speeds of 30 to 40 miles per hour and without a heating system. According to GWR, the train would be able to cover around 120 miles even if travelling at the full speed of 60 mph (96 km/h).

The train is equipped with six batteries that use a hybrid chemical blend and also has a new fast charging system, which was not used during the record attempt.

“People may have heard of electric cars charging in 40 minutes instead of 3 hours. We’re doing the same thing with train technology, where train batteries can be charged in just 3 minutes,” Gentleman said.
“That might not be a full charge, but it will be enough for the train to reach its next destination or make a round trip on a secondary line.”

The test also showed major environmental benefits: the battery-powered train showed an 80% reduction in total carbon emissions, compared to a diesel-powered train. The record journey has been verified by the Rail Performance Association, which analyses the performance of the UK rail network. Great Western Railway says its future plans will see the battery-electric trains travel more than 60 miles on a single charge.
