US plans Alaska LNG summit - Trump urges Japan and South Korea to support

US President Donald Trump's Energy Security Council plans to hold a summit in Alaska in early June. During that time, the Trump administration hopes that Japan and South Korea will announce their commitments to a liquefied natural gas project in the area.

Trump is optimistic about the $44 billion project in Alaska, which would transport gas from the state's North Slope fields through a 1,300-km pipeline for domestic use and send it to customers in Asia as LNG, bypassing the Panama Canal.

While the project has been talked about for years, progress has been limited by cost and volume of work.

Trump, who has pushed allies to buy American energy while simultaneously threatening trade tariffs, has urged the Japanese government to support the Alaska plan.

Last month, Taiwanese state-owned energy company CPC Corp signed a non-binding agreement with state-owned Alaska Gasline Development Corp to purchase LNG and invest in the project.

The summit being planned by the National Energy Domination Council, which aims to maximize oil and gas production, will take place around June 2.

Separately, officials from Thailand, which could also be a customer of Alaskan LNG, and South Korea are expected to visit the country to talk about the project in the next two weeks, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

South Korea's Ministry of Industry said it was not aware of any plans to announce its commitment and that "there is still much to be done" through verification of the Alaska gas project. According to official sources, the country is sending an inspection team and proper verifications will show the continuation of the discussions.
