US President Donald Trump announced on social media that he had ordered the Central Command to carry out bombings against Iranian military targets on the strategic island of Kharg. “At my direction, the United States Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in Middle Eastern history and completely destroyed every military target on the pearl of Iran, Kharg Island,” the president wrote in a post on Truth Social.

Trump added that no oil infrastructure on the island was attacked. “If Iran, or anyone else, does anything to interfere with the free and safe passage of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider that decision,” Trump continued. Speaking late Friday, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that the military campaign would last “as long as necessary.”

Analysts say the prospect of a US move to seize Kharg Island, a strategically important hub for Iran, is considered an extremely high risk, both geopolitically and economically. The 8-kilometer-long coral island has been untouched during two weeks of attacks by the United States and Israel.

The Trump administration has discussed invading the island, according to a report by Axios on March 7, while White House officials have previously said they expect oil prices to fall significantly once the operation is complete.

Kharg Island has been the focus of global attention because it is considered one of Iran's most sensitive economic targets. The terminal accounts for about 90% of the country's crude oil exports and has a loading capacity of approximately 7 million barrels per day.

Analysts say any attempt to take the island would require a ground operation, a decision the United States is reluctant to make. London's Brent crude ended the week near $103 a barrel and has risen about 40% since the conflict began two weeks ago.
