US monitors Piraeus Port/ Demands reduction of China's control over Greek maritime industry
The United States is evaluating ways to limit China's widespread presence and influence in the international supply chain and port industry, including Piraeus in Greece. According to official US sources, Washington wants to weaken Beijing's global network and bring more commercial ports under Western control.
The US government sources specifically referred to Chinese interests in the port of Piraeus, which is a central hub for the Asian nation. Chinese company COSCO owns 67% of the Piraeus Port Authority, and some Chinese investors are concerned that Washington may try to target the firm's activities in Greece.
Greek officials have previously said they have not been informed of any plans to change control of the structure. Under European and Greek legal systems, it is difficult to force a private individual out of their investment, except in cases where they are found to be in breach of the law or contractual obligations.
However, in March, the Ministry of Maritime Transport made an urgent call for infrastructure improvements at the port of Piraeus and stressed the need for all investments to proceed immediately. He even met with the Chinese ambassador and the Port Authority administration on the issue.
This US strategy is part of an ambitious plan aimed at expanding American influence and protecting itself from the risks that could arise in the event of a conflict with China. One option being considered is to buy Chinese shares in a number of ports through American or other Western companies.
"The US aims to attack China's international influence by exaggerating the 'Chinese threat' theory to force allies to align with the United States," a document released by Beijing officials said.
