EU, gas imports declining/ Cause, ban on Russian transit and increase in LNG

Pipeline gas imports into the European Union fell by 9% year-on-year in the first half of 2025. According to the latest analysis, this decline was influenced by the ban on the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine at the beginning of the year, but the bloc has increased its dependence on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The use of energy-efficient appliances and the increase in renewable sources have helped reduce gas consumption in the EU over recent years, according to an updated report by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis.

However, as the bloc considers how to halt oil and gas imports from Moscow by the end of 2027, Russian gas imports via Turkey have increased in recent years. Ankara has made it clear that it will not support the EU plan to cut off these imports, offering Russia an opportunity to enter the European market.

According to EU data, the three main sources of pipeline gas imports in the first half of the year were Norway (55%), Algeria (19%) and Russia via Turkey (10%). The institute added that imports from Azerbaijan, Libya and Norway decreased compared to the same period last year, while those from Algeria, Russia via Turkey, Ankara and the United Kingdom increased slightly. Overall, pipeline gas imports from Russia shrank from over 150 billion cubic meters in 2021, before the start of the war in Ukraine, to less than 52 billion cubic meters in 2024.

LNG imports are expected to rise further following the EU-US trade deal, in which the bloc agreed to buy $250 billion worth of energy a year, including liquefied natural gas. Analysts see the EU’s withdrawal from Russia as a “tremendous opportunity” for the US to become Europe’s most reliable supplier of natural gas. However, demand for gas in Europe is falling and the market is unlikely to consume excess quantities, they explain.
