US-Qatar, defense and aviation agreement - Trump faces criticism after receiving luxury aircraft
US President Donald Trump announced that Boeing had secured a $96 billion deal to sell up to 210 of the company's planes to Qatar. The deal comes as the US president presents Qatar's offer to give him a $400 million luxury jet as an opportunity too good to turn down.
Qatar Airways' purchase of Boeing jets, the largest order for wide-body aircraft in the company's history, formed the centerpiece of more than $243 billion worth of deals signed during Trump's visit to Doha. The White House claims the aviation deal alone will support 154,000 American jobs annually.
Trump also secured a declaration of cooperation for more than $38 billion in future defense investments in Qatar, further entwining America’s economic and security relationship with the state that offered him a luxury jet. Before the deal, Trump dismissed ethical concerns about accepting Qatar’s special offer for the jet, saying the current presidential jet simply doesn’t compare to those of Gulf monarchies.
Irritated by questions about the ethical criticism of accepting such a large gift as president, Trump insisted that American prestige was at stake. “We are the United States of America. I believe we should have the most impressive airplane.”
The US leader's visit comes just weeks after the Trump Organization secured a deal with Qatar for a luxury resort and golf course development outside the capital Doha, called Trump International Golf Club & Villas.
According to the US President, it will take several years for the new Boeing jets to be ready. The future Air Force One fleet, a $3.9 billion contract awarded to Boeing in 2018 for delivery in 2024, has been delayed by several years.
