US "cashes" Venezuela's oil money - US Senator: Trump is doing

Hundreds of millions of dollars that the US is collecting from the sale of Venezuelan oil have been sent to Qatar. The move is seen as an indirect route that could speed up the flow of money, but it also raises doubts about the transparency of the funds.

The Trump administration confirmed the first sale of Venezuelan oil, saying $500 million was raised.

The funds were sent to Qatar, rather than being held in U.S. banks or sent directly to Venezuela, according to a former administration official. Banks in Venezuela have begun advertising the cash, claiming that oil revenues have arrived in the country.

President Donald Trump has complained about Venezuela "stealing" American oil assets there, but has contradictingly said it is important that the revenues favor Venezuela and prevent former allied states from interfering with the money the US is generating from these sales.

Qatar has long served as a mediator between the United States and the Venezuelan government, even before the US arrest of President Maduro.

Some critics of the Trump administration are skeptical of the president's ideology. "There is no legal basis for a president to open an account outside a country that he controls," said U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, the first reporter for this story. "This is exactly the kind of action that would be inspired by a corrupt politician," she added.
