Robots take to the field - Humanoids compete in various sports and technological challenges
China opened the "World Humanoid Robot Games", a three-day event aimed at showcasing progress in the field of artificial intelligence and robotics, with the participation of 280 teams from 16 different countries.
The robots competed in sports as diverse as athletics and table tennis, but also in unique challenges for robots, including dispensing medicine, material handling and cleaning services. Participating teams came from countries including the United States, Germany and Brazil, with 192 teams from universities and 88 from private companies, including Chinese firms Unitree and Fourier Intelligence. The robots used were manufactured by Chinese companies.
“We come here to play and win, but we are also interested in scientific research,” said a member of the German team from the Leipzig University of Science. “Here you can test a lot of interesting and new approaches. If something doesn’t work, we lose the game. It’s a shame, but it’s better than investing a lot of money in a product that fails,” he said.
During the Beijing games, for which tickets cost between $17 and $80, robots collided with each other and frequently fell during football matches and running events.
Despite frequent falls that required human intervention to lift them, many humanoids managed to stand up on their own, earning applause from the audience.
Organizers said the games offer valuable data-gathering opportunities that will help develop robots for practical use, such as in manufacturing plants. According to commentators, the soccer matches help train robots' coordination skills, an important quality for assembly line operations, where cooperation between different units is required.
China is investing billions of dollars in robotics and humanoid robots in an effort to cope with an aging population and remain competitive with the United States in the field of advanced technologies.
