"The UN must have a woman at the top" - Leading candidate Rebecca

Rebecca Grynspan, former vice president of Costa Rica and one of the leading contenders to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations, said that if equality triumphs over discrimination, the UN will finally have a woman at the helm.

The process to elect the new UN chief officially began last week, as member states were invited to propose candidates to replace António Guterres on January 1, 2027.

Although the UN has 80 years of history as an international organization for peace and cooperation, the position of Secretary-General has never been held by a woman, something that, according to Grynspan, has no logical explanation, as many women have the skills and credentials to lead.

Publicly stated candidates for the post include Greenspan himself, who is currently Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and Argentine diplomat Rafael Grossi.

“We are not asking for special treatment. What we are asking for is non-discrimination,” said Grynspan, 69. “If equality prevails, we will be able to achieve this.”

Calls for a woman to lead the UN have increased in recent years, and it is likely that the next Secretary-General will come from Latin America, as the post traditionally rotates by region. Latin America and the Caribbean are next on the list.

Greenspan stressed that the UN must become more inclusive, recalling that when it was founded after World War II, it had only 51 member states, while today there are 193, most of which did not participate in the drafting of the initial structure of 1945. If elected, Greenspan will take over the UN during Donald Trump’s term as president of the United States. Trump has maintained a critical stance on multilateralism, accusing the UN of not helping him broker peace in several conflicts. He describes the UN as an institution with “great potential” but that needs to “organize its functioning better.”

UN leadership has rejected Trump's comments, saying the organization is working to implement reforms and that US support has saved lives.
