Meta, under the EU's "magnifier" - The company will be investigated for the use of AI in Whatsapp

Brussels has launched a new investigation into Meta Platforms over how the company deployed artificial intelligence functions on WhatsApp, the European Commission announced.
The action marks another step by European regulators against big tech companies, as the EU tries to find a balance between supporting the sector and curbing its influence.
The European Commission opened an investigation into "Meta's new policy relating to the access of artificial intelligence providers to WhatsApp," after the California-based company integrated its Meta AI system into the messaging app earlier this year.
A WhatsApp spokesperson said that "the claims are baseless," adding that the appearance of chatbots on the platform "is creating pressure on our systems, which are not built to support this type of load."
“However, the artificial intelligence space is highly competitive and users have access to their favorite services in many ways, through app stores, search engines, email, partner integrations, and operating systems,” he explained.
Meta AI, a chatbot and virtual assistant, has been part of the WhatsApp interface since March 2025 in European markets.
Italy's competition regulator opened a parallel investigation in July into allegations that Meta exploited its dominant position by integrating an artificial intelligence tool into WhatsApp. The investigation was expanded in November to look into whether Meta further abused its dominance by blocking rival chatbots from the messaging platform.
According to the Financial Times, the EU investigation will be conducted under traditional competition rules and not under the Digital Markets Act, which is currently being used to examine potential infringements in Amazon and Microsoft's cloud services.
