AI cybersecurity threats - Tech giants call for global response

More than 100 companies, including artificial intelligence giants OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Perplexity, have signed an open letter calling for a global effort to strengthen cyber threats enabled by artificial intelligence.

"We have a limited window to strengthen cyber defenses. In the coming months, cyberattacks enabled by artificial intelligence will become much more widespread and sophisticated, as models around the world become increasingly capable," the letter states.

Other signatories to the letter include Adobe, AMD, Cisco, Dell, Oracle, IBM and German technology giant SAP, as well as Deutsche Telekom. They are calling for more funding and resources for cybersecurity.

Companies called for a broad response, ranging from end-user companies strengthening their security protocols to “frontier AI companies” building new surveillance and security tools to confront threats enabled by AI.

In particular, they also called on governments to pay for local and international responses to new cybersecurity threats. “Funding cyber defense, starting with essential services that do not have the staff or budget to operate,” the letter reads.

In the United States, the Trump administration has imposed deep cuts to the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) last year, cutting staff by about a third.

The letter also called on governments to “accelerate the expansion of trusted access programs, particularly for critical infrastructure supply chains, and expand access to defense capabilities for other defenders.”
