Global wind capacity to hit record in 2024 - China dominates sector, with almost

The Global Wind Energy Council report showed that new capacity reached a record in 2024 for the second consecutive year, after two years of decline. Additions reached 117 GW, compared with 116.6 GW in 2023. Global wind power capacity increased to 1.14 TW, according to the data.

In the new perspective, this year's total new capacity is forecast to be 138.2 GW, increasing each year to reach a staggering 194.1 GW in 2030.

The Global Council warned of increasing policy volatility in some markets and noted the need to improve permitting, grid transmission and auctioning mechanisms to keep pace with the global electrification trend. This would help meet ambitions to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030.

The council stressed that the headline figures mask large disparities, with the bulk of installations taking place in a small number of key markets.

New installations were recorded in 55 countries. China maintained its absolute dominance, adding 79.8 GW, which translates to 68.2% of the total. Moreover, at the end of December, the country had 521 GW of wind power or a staggering 45.8% of global capacity.

Globally, the United States ranks a distant second, with 4.1 GW, and a total capacity of 154.3 GW. The next three countries are Germany (4 GW), India (3.4 GW) and Brazil (3.3 GW), which surpassed Spain.

Europe’s new installations fell slightly in 2024, to 13.8 GW, from 14.5 GW the previous year. Total capacity increased to 251 GW. The region includes Turkey, which increased by 1.31 GW to 13.7 GW. The country accounted for 1.1% of all new capacity last year, placing it in the top ten in this category.
