Canada, Aviation Industry under US Pressure - President Trump: 50% Import Tariff

US President Donald Trump will not accept the certification of Canadian aircraft, Bombardier Global Express, thus threatening 50% import tariffs on all aircraft manufactured in Canada, due to delays in the certification of aircraft manufactured by American rival Gulfstream.

“If for some reason this mistake is not corrected immediately, I will be imposing a 50% tariff on every aircraft sold in America,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. His statement came amid heightened tensions between the two countries after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called on nations to accept the end of the US-based global order.

This threat, if implemented, will have a negative influence on American carriers such as American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, which have many Canadian aircraft as part of their fleets.

The statistical company Cirium said that there are 150 active Global Express aircraft registered in the US and 5,425 Canadian aircraft of various types registered in the US.

Bombardier, based in Montreal, said it had taken note of Trump's statement and was in contact with the Canadian government. "We hope this matter can be resolved as soon as possible to avoid risks to air traffic and consumers," the company said.

Airline officials said that if the US does not accept certification of the aircraft for economic reasons, it would give other countries a powerful weapon, putting the entire aviation system at risk.
