Google "expands" the boundaries of AI - Introducing new modes and advanced technologies for users
Alphabet's Google said it would put artificial intelligence in the hands of more internet users, announcing a $249.99-a-month subscription for users of its innovative technology. The company's latest attempt to fend off growing competition from startups like OpenAI.
Google unveiled the plans amid a slew of demonstrations that included new smart glasses at its annual conference in Mountain View, California. The company also laid out a vision for Google Search that lets consumers do virtually anything, from simple queries to complex research questions, from analyzing what a smartphone camera sees to buying tickets to an event. The tech giant also said it aims to build a personal, proactive artificial intelligence, whether it’s calling a store for users or sending students a real-time practice test.
CEO Sundar Pichai said at the conference that Alphabet would build such a model with cost in mind. "Consistently, we've been able to offer the best models at the most effective price," he said.
Google's Gemini Assistant now has more than 400 million monthly active users, according to Pichai. The company announced that consumers across the United States can now switch Google Search to "AI Mode." Introduced in March as an open experiment to test users, the feature provides computer-generated answers to complex questions.
Google also announced the "AI Ultra Plan," which for $249.99 per month offers users early access to experimental tools like Project Mariner, a web browser extension that can automate keystrokes and mouse clicks, as well as Deep Think, a version of the Gemini model that is better able to reason about complex tasks.
The price is comparable to $200 monthly plans from model developers OpenAI and Anthropic, underscoring how companies are exploring ways to pay for the cost of developing artificial intelligence. Google's new plan also includes 30 terabytes of cloud storage and an ad-free YouTube subscription.
Pichai told reporters that the expansion of generative artificial intelligence was not at the expense of online search. He said that “it’s not a win-win situation. New technology is helping to provide people with new ways to search.”
