Donald Trump "forgives" the EU once again - Postpones imposition of

US President Donald Trump said he has agreed to postpone the imposition of 50% tariffs on European Union imports until July 9. He stated that he had a productive phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

"She wants to start serious negotiations," Trump told reporters at Morristown Municipal Airport in New Jersey. "July 9 is the date she asked for. Can we move it from June 1 to July 9? I agreed to do that."

On Friday, Trump said he was "not looking for a deal" with the EU and that their tariff had been set at 50% and would take effect on June 1. Minutes after speaking to reporters, Trump posted on Truth Social that "talks will begin quickly."

Earlier in the day, von der Leyen had posted on X that she had had a "good phone conversation" with Trump.

"The EU and the US share the most important and closest trade relationship in the world," von der Leyen tweeted. "Europe is ready to advance the talks with speed and determination. To reach a good deal, we will need time until July 9."

Last year, the United States had a $236 billion trade deficit with the EU, according to data from the US Department of Commerce.
