Wind farms to surpass coal in 2025 - Increase in generation capacity expected to

Europe's wind farms could produce more electricity than coal-fired power plants for the first time in 2025 if production expansion continues at this rate.

Total wind energy on the old continent was just 4% less than the continent's coal-fired power plants in 2024, coming in at 616 terawatt hours (TWh) versus 641 TWh, according to data from energy group Ember.

Compared to a year ago, coal production was 7% lower in 2024 while wind production was 3% higher, and if these production changes are repeated in 2025, then wind electricity generation in Europe will surpass coal by about 6% in 2025.

This would mark the first time that a single source of renewable energy exceeds coal-fired electricity generation in any major region and would be a key milestone in the energy transition.

The 25 TWh gap between wind and coal generation in 2024 is about half the amount of electricity produced by Europe's wind farms each month, according to Ember.

As a result, this output gap could easily be filled during 2025 by an increase in regional wind generation capacity, by higher average wind speeds at the turbine level, or by a combination of the two.

According to industry group Wind Europe, energy companies added 15 gigawatts (GW) of wind generating capacity in 2024, bringing the region's total capacity to around 287 GW.

This increase is expected to allow farms to increase regional electricity production to record levels in 2025, potentially reaching around 652 TWh.
