China-Russia trade at record levels - Total value to reach USD 237 billion in 2024
The value of China's imports and exports with Russia will reach a record $237 billion in 2024, according to Chinese customs data. The total rose 2.9% in 2024 from 2023. Growth was significantly slower than the 32.7% gain a year earlier.
Bilateral trade was disrupted by payments hurdles last year after the United States intensified sanctions on banks linked to Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin said in December that the main challenge for Russia-China trade is mutual payments.
Chinese shipments to Russia in 2024 rose 5.0% from a year earlier, down sharply from a 53.9% gain in 2023, customs data showed. Imports from Russia rose 1% last year, slowing from an 18.6% expansion in 2023.
In an exchange of New Year greetings, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on December 31 that China and Russia have always walked together on the right path.
Vladimir Putin also emphasized that bilateral relations had reached a level never seen before.
In December alone, China's exports to Russia rose 6.4%, reversing November's decline, but imports from Russia shrank 4.3% last month.
