Carney, speech at the European Parliament - EU and Canada aim to strengthen trade and political relations
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will address the European Parliament next month as Canada and the EU seek to forge closer ties as a rift with the United States deepens over President Donald Trump's tariffs. Carney will address the European Parliament on September 17 and will participate in European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's State of the Union address, which sets out the EU's policy priorities and political direction.
The EU's invitation to Carney is more political than in previous years, when Brussels chose civil society figures and focused on Ukraine. The participation also coincides with the Canadian prime minister's pledge to seek an ever closer partnership with the EU as the US-Canada trade war escalates into a historic clash.
Last week, trade talks between Canada and the United States collapsed after months of difficult negotiations, with Ottawa accusing Washington of interfering in its sovereignty. But the Trump administration argues that Canada is protecting America, has not spent much on defense and that Carney is using unusual tactics for political gain.
The US imposed tariffs of up to 50% on $20 billion worth of Canadian products and threatened other tariffs on key sectors. Canada also announced reciprocal tariffs and said it would respond “tickle for tickle”. US President Donald Trump said he was considering renaming Lake Ontario “Lake of America”, following the decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America. Trump has repeatedly referred to Canada as a state of America and has questioned the border between the two countries, arguing that it was arbitrarily drawn with a ruler.
Carney, a former central banker, has backed a coalition of so-called middle powers as the international order has descended into chaos, with the United States pursuing an aggressive tariff agenda.
