EU-US, digital regulation delays agreement - Washington claims concessions for American tech companies
The European Union is seeking to prevent the United States from targeting its digital rules, according to the Financial Times. The two sides are working to finalize a statement that would formalize the trade deal reached last month.
EU officials have said that disagreements over “non-tariff barriers,” which the US includes in digital regulations, are one of the reasons for the delay in the declaration, according to the newspaper. The European Union, the White House and the US State Department did not immediately comment on the matter.
The statement had originally been scheduled to be released days after the agreement was announced in July by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump. The July pact imposed a 15% import tariff on most EU goods, half the rate initially threatened, and helped avert a wider trade war between the two allies, which together account for nearly a third of global trade.
The US has sought to keep open the possibility of concessions on the EU's Digital Services Act, which Washington says restricts freedom of expression and imposes costs on American technology companies. But the European Commission has called any relaxation of those rules unacceptable.
The bloc's act aims to create a safer and fairer online environment by forcing tech giants to do more to combat illegal content, such as hate speech and child sexual abuse.
The commission had expected Trump to sign an executive order by August 15 to reduce tariffs on EU car exports to the US from 27.5% to 15%. However, a US official said that order would be delayed until the joint statement is finalized.
