New Zealand "Emptying" - Departure of citizens, at the highest level

New Zealand has seen its highest number of citizens leaving the country since 2012 as the country's economy slows. In the 12 months to June, 71,851 citizens left the country, the highest number in 13 years. Only 25,353 citizens returned, resulting in a net exodus of 46,497 people.

Many citizens have chosen to look abroad, particularly to Australia, for higher-paying jobs, while the economy at home has weakened and unemployment is rising.

Foreign workers are also showing less and less interest in coming to New Zealand as jobs are scarce, which has led to a continued decline in annual net immigration to just 13,702, the lowest level since November 2022. This figure is far from the peak reached in October 2023, when annual net immigration had reached 135,529.

Although departures have increased, it is precisely the significant decline in arrivals that has had the greatest impact on the overall decrease in net immigration. The country's economy is struggling to recover from a deep recession in 2024, while unemployment is rising and businesses have curbed investment and employment.

Some local economists predict no economic expansion in the quarter ending in June, while the Reserve Bank of New Zealand predicts average annual growth of just 0.7% for 2025.

According to the statistics agency, about 59% of those leaving headed for Australia, based on data from last year. The departures are more concentrated in younger age groups, with 38% of them being between the ages of 18 and 30.
