EU-US, talks on critical minerals - Tariff issues also at the center of the meetings

European Union Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said he had constructive talks with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on advancing work on critical minerals and tariff issues during the World Trade Organization ministerial meeting in Cameroon.
Sefcovic said both sides were working to "further advance" cooperation on critical raw materials and were seeking to schedule a visit by him to the United States to continue discussions.
The comments come after EU lawmakers on Thursday approved legislation that fulfills the bloc's commitments under the trade deal reached with Washington in Turnberry, Scotland, last July, after months of uncertainty over former President Donald Trump's tariff threats. The safeguards were added to reflect concerns that the United States might not fully abide by the agreement.
Under the deal, the United States imposed a 15% tariff on most EU goods, half the tariff initially threatened, averting a deeper trade conflict between the two partners that account for nearly a third of global trade.
"It was important to have the positive vote in the European Parliament last week, because it shows that on both sides, despite the turbulence on the global stage, we are sticking to the agreement," Sefcovic said.
He added that the EU will continue to seek new free trade agreements and work to reduce tariffs with existing partners. "We need to have good rapport, good relations and be able to address any issues," he said.
The United States is the EU's largest trading partner, with EU exports reaching a record €555 billion in 2025.
