"85 million children worldwide are out of school" - UNICEF calls for urgent investment in global education

Today is World Teachers' Day, established in 1994 to commemorate the signing of the Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, drafted in Paris on October 5, 1966. According to UNICEF, teachers are at the heart of quality education, but the sector continues to suffer from a lack of investment and declining student numbers.
In the 2024 report by the United Nations Children's Fund, only 31% of countries have effective systems for teacher professional development, far short of the target of 64%.
Worldwide, the report says the number of children and youth out of education has remained at around 265 million for a decade, but the latest estimates show that by 2023 this number will have risen to 272 million.
According to UNICEF, Official Development Assistance for Education will decrease by $3.2 billion, a contraction of 24% compared to 2023. This will cause an increase in the number of out-of-school children worldwide, from 272 million to 278 million.
"No child should be deprived of the right to learn and build their future: ensuring trained and motivated teachers means not only providing knowledge, but also protection, hope and opportunities for life," said official sources from the organization.
UNICEF estimates that 234 million children need support to access quality education, an increase of 35 million in the last three years.
Of these 234 million children, 85 million do not attend school: 52% are girls, 17% are refugees or internally displaced persons, and over 20% are children with disabilities.
The situation in Gaza is particularly dire, with an estimated 1,466,000 children facing difficulties accessing education as of July 2025. As of June 2025, 588 school buildings have been affected, of which 538 are in the Gaza Strip (95.4%) and 50 in the West Bank.
