80% of toys imported into the EU from China - Germany, France and the Netherlands are the main destinations of imports
The holiday season is approaching, and toys occupy an important place on the shopping list. Global trade data helps to understand how these products reach people's homes around the world.
According to Eurostat, the European Union (EU) was a net importer of toys in 2023, with a value of 6.5 billion euros of imported toys, a decrease of 2 billion euros compared to 2022. While exports outside the EU reached 2.3 billion euros, a slight decrease of 0.2 billion euros compared to last year. These figures reflect the bloc's dependence on other countries to meet domestic consumer demand.
China remains the largest supplier of toys to the EU, accounting for 80% of all imports, with a value of €5.2 billion. This value creates a great distance between Beijing and other countries, such as Vietnam, which is the second largest supplier, with 6% (367 million euros). While the United Kingdom ranks below with only 2% (150 million euros).
About a fifth of EU toy imports went to Germany, which accounted for 18% of total toy imports, followed by France with 16% and the Netherlands with 14%.
In addition to major imports, the European Union is also an exporter of toys to various regions of the world. The data shows that three EU countries are responsible for more than half of exports outside the bloc: the Czech Republic, Germany and Belgium. The Czech Republic ranks first, accounting for 29% of the total, followed by Germany with 19% and Belgium with 8%.
The United Kingdom is the main destination of exports, accounting for 30% of the total, with a value of 694 million euros. After it comes Switzerland, with 13% or 301 million euros, and the United States, which imports 10% (233 million euros).
