US Aims to Triple Nuclear Power Capacity - Government Plans to Increase

The US government has set a target of adding 200 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity by 2050, at least tripling US nuclear power capacity based on 2020 figures.

New capacity will come from multiple sources, including the construction of new plants such as large, small modular reactors, water-cooled Generation III+ and Generation IV models. It is also intended to improve the existing reactors and restart operations for plants that have stopped production for economic reasons.

To achieve this, the US government is also setting short-term targets. The United States plans to restart the nuclear power deployment ecosystem with 35 GW of new capacity in operation by 2035.

According to a new roadmap, the short-term target of 2035 reflects the urgency needed to enable the domestic expansion of nuclear power. Adding 35 GW by 2035 will put the US on track to an annual pace of 15 GW by 2040, bringing the 200 GW target by 2050.

The current operating US fleet consists of 94 reactors. The government plans to build new large reactors using existing nuclear sites. Among the 54 countries with operating reactors and 11 where reactors have stopped production, a recent study identified 41 sites with land, water and other conditions to accommodate new large reactors with a capacity of up to 60 GW.

Also, the US plans to develop many new small modular reactors at existing coal-fired power plant sites that have recently been “retired” or will soon be closed. Such transitions from coal to nuclear power are positive as they can reuse existing transmission, water and land-based infrastructure to reduce costs and leverage the existing workforce.
