US Targets Over 60% Emissions Cut by 2035 - But Climate Goals Will Hinge on

The outgoing Joe Biden administration has committed the US to reducing greenhouse gas emissions between 61% and 66% below 2005 levels by 2035.

Washington also reaffirmed support for the global agreement at the COP28 climate summit to "transition away from fossil fuels".

The United States notes that it has easily exceeded its pledge of 17% by 2020, and the country aims to reduce emissions by 50-52% below 2005 levels by 2030, under the Biden administration's Bipartisan Infrastructure Act and the Reducing Inflation.

But America's trajectory will depend a lot on what Trump does during his second coming to the US presidency. He promised during the campaign to withdraw from the Paris Agreement for a second time, and has repeatedly called for a boost in oil drilling.

The US has become the world's leading exporter of oil and gas, and production has continued to rise to new record levels under Biden. For the purposes of global climate efforts, countries are judged only by the oil they burn, not by what they sell.

In an effort to limit Trump's influence on climate action, the United States Climate Alliance, a bipartisan but largely Democratic group of state governors created in 2017, has released a "complementary" target that reflects a 60% reduction in emissions by 2035.

The 24 states represented by the governors house 55% of the US population and represent about 60% of economic output.
