US suspends 10% of flights at 40 airports - Cause, the longest shutdown in US government history

United States Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said he will order a 10% reduction in flights at 40 major US airports starting Friday if a deal is not reached to end the federal government shutdown.
The shutdown, now in its 36th day and the longest in U.S. history, has forced about 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents to work without pay. It has exacerbated staffing shortages, caused widespread flight delays and lengthened lines at airport security checkpoints.
The move is expected to affect the busiest airports, including those in New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Dallas. In total, about 1,800 flights and over 268,000 airline seats could be reduced, according to data from analytics firm Cirium.
The move is intended to ease pressure on air traffic controllers. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has planned to hold a virtual meeting with airlines to clarify how the restrictions will be implemented.
The federal government remains shut down as Republicans and Democrats are locked in a budget standoff in Congress. Democrats are refusing to approve a plan that does not include extending health insurance subsidies, while Republicans are opposing that request.
President Donald Trump and Republicans are trying to increase pressure on Democrats, increasing the impact of the shutdown on ordinary Americans.
Since it began on October 1, the shutdown has left many low-income families without food assistance, disrupted public services and led to the suspension of about 750,000 federal workers.
