US restricts chip exports to China - The decision aims to hinder Beijing's

The United States imposed new restrictions on exports of chips and semiconductor equipment to China, marking the latest blow by the Biden administration to curb the country's competitive advances in chipmaking.

The new export controls put more than 100 Chinese chip makers on a restricted trade list, barring US companies from shipping equipment to them without specific permits.

The move also blocks sales of certain chips critical to training artificial intelligence, as well as some software tools, the federal agency added.

According to the Commerce Department, the new restrictions are intended to "damage" China's ability to dominate the production of advanced technologies that pose a risk to national security.

"As technology evolves and our adversaries seek new ways to circumvent restrictions, we will continue to work with our allies and partners to proactively and aggressively protect our world-leading technologies and knowledge so that they are not used to undermine our national security," the White House national security adviser added.

The announcement is expected to be one of the latest efforts by the Biden administration to curb China's chip production and, in turn, the development of military equipment and artificial intelligence systems that pose a risk to US security.

The Chinese foreign ministry said the export controls violate the laws of the market economy and disrupt international trade order.

"China firmly opposes the US overstretching the concept of national security, abusing export controls and blocking and oppressing the country," the official sources said, adding that Beijing would take measures to protect interests of Chinese companies.
