OpenAI partners with defense industry - Partnership will use AI to identify

The spread of artificial intelligence in the defense industry is getting a boost from OpenAI's new partnership with Anduril Industries. The defense technology company announced a strategic partnership with the creator of ChatGPT to improve the capability of unmanned aircraft systems and "detect potentially lethal aerial threats in real time."

Both companies will look at how OpenAI's most advanced models, such as GPT-4o and OpenAI o1, can be used "to rapidly synthesize sensitive data and reduce the burden on human operators." Through the partnership, the company of Defense said OpenAI models will be trained on data from operations of Anduril's anti-drone systems.

"OpenAI builds artificial intelligence to benefit the most people and supports US-led efforts to ensure that technology supports democratic values," said OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman in a statement. "Our partnership with Anduril will help technology protect US military personnel and help the national security community responsibly use this technology to keep our citizens safe and free," he added.

Until January, OpenAI's usage policies said the company did not allow the models to be used for "activities with a high risk of physical harm" such as "military". The updated usage policies do not mention the military or war, but do say that users should not use the "service to harm themselves or others," including developing or using weapons.

In November, FedScoop reported that OpenAI and the Air Force Research Laboratory were collaborating to offer limited ChatGPT Enterprise for research work.
