Full entry into Schengen enriches Bulgaria - The financial benefits would reach

Bulgaria would benefit about 830 million euros a year as a result of full admission to the Schengen border-free zone, according to the local Institute of Economic Research.

Bulgaria and Romania have been admitted to Schengen, but only by sea and air, while the removal of their land borders was opposed by Austria. However, Vienna agreed last month to lift its veto. The final decision must be taken by the EU Council on December 12.

The two industries that would enjoy the greatest financial benefits are manufacturers and exporters of goods with 432 million euros per year and the cargo sector (279 million euros per year).

Another positive result of the removal of land borders would be the elimination of direct and possible time losses for Bulgarian citizens during the land border crossing with Romania and Greece, amounting to about 242,400 days.

Citizens of Romania and Greece visiting Bulgaria will also benefit from membership in the Schengen area with a total of 218,000 days saved. This would bring financial benefits estimated at 36.3 million euros for Bulgarian tourism.

Another advantage would be related to the overall environmental effect of the extended time for passing border controls by land. The Institute has estimated that the volume of harmful CO2 emissions created as a result of vehicles queuing at the borders of Bulgaria and Romania amounts to 46,162 tons per year. These carbon emissions are also expected to decrease significantly.
