The President decrees the date of the elections, set for May 11, 2025 - Signature of the head of state after consultations with political parties and CEC
This Thursday, the President of the Republic of Albania Bajram Begaj issued the decree for setting the date of the elections for next year. Referring to the decree, the elections for the Assembly of Albania will be held on May 11, 2025.
We remind you that for these elections the President of the Republic had four Sundays available between April 15 and May 15, 2025.
However, the reason for setting the date of May 11, 2025, as the date for holding these elections lies in the need expressed by the Central Election Commission to use all the time available for the preparation of the legal and organizational infrastructure, in order to become successful and effective voting of Albanians from abroad was possible.
The President of the Republic expresses his conviction that the major challenge of these elections is voting from abroad and the massive involvement of voters residing abroad in this essential process for democracy.
All political forces have publicly expressed their determination to assist this process and to subordinate the election date to this priority interest. The President of the Republic fully joins and unequivocally respects this will.
The Democratic Party and a significant part of the parliamentary parties presented to the President of the Republic the concern that the planning of the 6th summit of the European Political Committee (EPC) for May 8 and 9, 2025, two days before the last possible date for the conduct of the elections, forms an unacceptable influence and advantage for the government, as well as significantly violates the principle of equality of arms required by the Electoral Code for the election campaign.
