Mexico seizes a record amount of drugs worth 400 million dollars after

Mexican troops have seized a record amount of fentanyl pills in the northern state of Sinaloa, equivalent to more than 20 million doses of the drug. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday morning, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the shipment was worth nearly $400 million (€380 million).

The massive seizure of the synthetic opioid, which Sheinbaum described as the largest in the country's history, follows US President-elect Donald Trump's threat to impose 25% tariffs on all goods coming from Mexico and Canada. if its leaders do not curb the flow of drugs and immigrants to the US.

Late Tuesday, soldiers and marines in Sinaloa, a hot spot for fentanyl production, saw two men with guns, according to Mexican authorities.

After following the men to two homes, troopers discovered 300 kilograms of fentanyl in one and a truckload of 800 kilograms of fentanyl in the other. Two men were arrested and several weapons were seized, authorities said.

Security analyst David Saucedo said the timing of the fentanyl bust was no coincidence. "It is clear that the Mexican government has managed the timing of the fentanyl seizures," he said. "But under pressure from Donald Trump, it appears that President Claudia Sheinbaum's administration is willing to increase the arrests of drug traffickers and drug seizures that Washington is seeking."

Saucedo warned that fentanyl operations of this type would do little to stop the production of the drug, which is made with precursor chemicals mostly imported from China. "It's a very, very large seizure," he said. "But if they don't dismantle the laboratories, this type of production will continue."

Before the latest drug bust, seizures of fentanyl in Mexico this year had been low, with just 130 kilograms seized across the country between January and June, well below the 2,329 kilograms seized in 2023.

Seizures of the synthetic opioid, which is thought to cause 70,000 overdose deaths in the US each year, have been on the rise in America. In early July, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) discovered 4 million blue fentanyl pills in a truck in Arizona. CBP said it was the largest mass seizure in its history.

In recent days, Canada and Mexico have tried to avoid tariffs that Trump said he would impose as soon as he begins his second presidential term in January. In a post on his Truth Social page in November, Trump claimed that both countries had the power to stop the flow of drugs like fentanyl into the US.

"Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily resolve this long-simmering problem. We demand that they use that power," Trump continued, "and until that time they do, it's time they to pay a great price!"

As a result of these threats, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau traveled last week to Mar-a-Lago, Trump's Florida residence, to dine with the US President-elect. The meeting was "very productive," Trump said.
