Young people, against the "current" in the labor market - BB: Only 15% of graduates finish the branches required by business
Albania has made significant progress in expanding access to higher education, but while the number of students graduating from higher education institutions has increased, there is a marked imbalance between fields of study.
The World Bank comes to this conclusion, where according to recently published data, less than 15 percent of graduates in Albania are from STEM programs which include science, technology, engineering, mathematics, compared to rates that are twice as high. high in the advanced economies of Europe.
The World Bank suggests that to ensure that higher education effectively contributes to economic growth, Albania should focus on improving the quality and relevance of education.
According to the World Bank, in particular, science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) education in higher education is vital to developing a skilled workforce, fostering innovation and addressing global challenges.
This institution believes that by integrating these skills, promoting interdisciplinary learning, and increasing the participation of underrepresented groups, STEM education can significantly contribute to economic and social progress.
Despite significant progress, the quality of education in Albania still remains below market requirements. Surveys with businesses show that the lack of skilled labor is a significant obstacle for businesses.
Therefore, it is suggested that it is essential to align educational outcomes with the needs of the labor market, ensuring that graduates possess the skills required by employers. By learning from the successful examples of other countries, best practices can be adopted to bridge this gap.
The World Bank's economic report for the Europe and Central Asia region underlines the essential role of higher education in promoting economic growth and developing innovation throughout the region, including Albania.
