US, towards reopening the government - Parties reach compromise on new

The United States Senate took the first step toward ending the longest government shutdown in history, after a group of moderate Democrats agreed to continue without a guarantee to extend health care subsidies.

In a test vote, the first step in a series of necessary procedures, the Senate voted 60-40 to move forward with a compromise government funding bill. The decision has angered many Democrats, who believe Americans want them to continue the fight.

The deal includes holding a later vote on extending the Affordable Care Act tax credits, which expire on Jan. 1. Final approval could take several days if Democrats oppose and delay the process.

The deal does not guarantee that health care subsidies will be extended, as Democrats have been demanding for nearly six weeks. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York voted against extending the package, along with all but eight of his Democratic colleagues.

Part of the agreement also includes the cancellation of mass layoffs of federal employees by the Trump administration since the beginning of the shutdown on October 1, as well as guaranteeing the right to receive back wages.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune immediately supported the deal and called for an emergency vote to begin the approval process as the government shutdown continues to cause flight delays, jeopardize food aid for millions of Americans and leave federal workers without pay. “The time to act is now,” Thune said.
