"Corruption remains a serious concern"—What progress has Albania made according to the European Commission report?!
The European Commission's document on Albania's progress highlights once again the same level of corruption. This document comes as a detailed analysis of our country's facing the criteria we must fulfill in our integration process, by showing the achievements as well as the areas that have not improved in our country.
Despite some progress in that area, according to the Commission, corruption remains a serious concern. Increasing the conviction number of high-level officials remains an important priority to further address the "culture of impunity".
Like the IMF, the European Commission also opposed the approval of the fiscal amnesty. The report warns us by highlighting that Albania is "on the grey list" regarding the fight against the financing of terrorism and money laundering and therefore "must implement the remaining elements of the action plan of the Financial Action Task Force. The adoption of a tax and criminal amnesty against the advice of the EU and Moneyval could jeopardize the progress in this area. "
The Commission describes the issue of "golden passports" as an obstacle to Albania's integration into the European Union.
The report further states: "Albania should give up the development of the investor citizenship scheme (golden passports) as it would pose higher risks in terms of security, money laundering, tax evasion, terrorist financing, corruption, and infiltration of organized crime, and it would be incompatible with EU norms."
Press freedom in the country was also a matter of criticism. Meanwhile, according to the report, Albania has made improvements in the judicial system, the fight against organized crime, and its foreign policy aligned with that of the European Union.
