The road speed limit should be 120 km/h - Proposal: Police shouldn't

A legal initiative for the amendment of the Road Code, which aims to change some existing rules, has been filed in Parliament. The initiative bears the signature of Democratic Party deputies and, among other things, foresees the increase of the speed limit on the country's highways.

The proposal states that the maximum speed limit on Albanian highways should be increased to 120 kilometers per hour, while currently it stands at 110 km per hour.

Also, the initiative provides an alternative punishment option for those who are stopped for speeding. The legal initiative provides the option of paying a fine worth twice the current one in exchange for not having the license suspended.

In addition to these changes, the proposal also aims to reduce the amount of the maximum fine. Currently, the maximum limit is 200,000 ALL, which is 4 times higher than the minimum wage. Meanwhile, the deputies are asking to have it downgraded to a maximum limit of 100 thousand AL.

Another listed change includes police routine checkpoints. In light of this initiative, it is evident that what happens with police checkpoints in Albania is unprecedented, while the proposed solution is that they are set up only in certain cases related to public order and security, with a document signed by the director of the Local Police.
