Germany plans to buy fighter jets from the US - The decision comes after tensions with France over the joint project
Germany plans to buy 15 additional F-35 fighter jets, Politico reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The move would increase Germany's fleet of the U.S.-made fighter jets to 50.
The report comes amid tensions between Germany and France over the joint Franco-German FCAS fighter jet partnership, following a report earlier this week that France now wants to control 80% of the work.
The request would overturn the agreed division of tasks and could stop the project from entering the next phase, an industry source told Reuters.
The German order would also align with the agreement among NATO allies to increase the collective spending target to 5% of output over the next decade, citing the long-term threat posed by Russia and the need to strengthen civilian and military resistance.
A spokesman for the German Defense Ministry said it generally did not comment “on possible procurement plans before they have been passed by parliament.” So far, Germany has ordered 35 F-35 jets to replace a total of 85 aging Tornado fighter jets that are due to retire.
A military source told Reuters that the figure of 15 additional F-35 jets had been part of previous considerations, but the numbers had to be adjusted after NATO's new weapons and troop targets.
The new targets suggest that the initial figure was not large enough and the actual number of additional F-35 aircraft needed could ultimately increase, although the source did not confirm this.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated a few days ago that differences remain regarding the configuration of the FCAS project, which has been accompanied by delays and internal clashes over the division of labor and intellectual property rights.
