Work of a humanoid robot sells for 1.3 million USD - This is the first portrait

A painting by a humanoid robot artist named Ai-Da has made history by selling for $1.32 million at Sotheby's. This is the first time a work by a humanoid robot has been sold by a major auction house.

The work, called 'IA God,' is a 7-meter-tall impressionist portrait depicting the father of modern computing, Alan Turing. The painting was estimated to sell for between $120,000 - $180,000.

"My artwork is a portrait of Alan Turing, the brilliant British mathematician who laid the foundation for modern computing and artificial intelligence," Ai-Da told Reuters.

"The portrait has a fractured and layered quality, reflecting our current, fragmented and multifaceted world," said the robot.

The Ai-Da robot, named after Ada Lovelace, the first computer programmer, is the brainchild of Aidan Meller, who says the machine aims to spark a conversation about how we interact with technology and artificial intelligence.

"We're absolutely at that transitional point from a human world where people make all the decisions to a post-human world where algorithms are starting to do that. I think the final phrase 'IA God' is a really good way to show the meaning of this transition," Meller said.

The process involved Ai-Da painting several small portraits of Alan Turing, which were then combined into one large canvas.

Studio Assistants then added paint and texture to the artwork. Finally, Ai-Da paints over the canvas creating new figures and textures.

The Sotheby's Digital Art sale, which also featured contributions from generational artists such as Xcopy, Pak and Refik Anadol, was held online from October 31 to November 7, 2024.
