Public debt, where are we in relation to the region? - Basic scenario: In 2031

The year 2025 is intended to be a good year in terms of narrowing the gap between income and expenditure as well as the government's public debt.

The budget deficit for 2025 is planned to be at the level of 2.6 percent of GDP and is expected to decrease further reaching 1.4 percent of GDP in 2027.

Also, the gross public debt is expected to follow the downward trajectory in accordance with the respective fiscal rule. In 2024, gross public debt is projected to decline to about 56.3 percent of GDP and is expected to further decline to about 55.8 percent in 2025. Under the baseline scenario, gross public debt is expected to decline to about 55.0 per percent in 2026 and further to about 48.5 percent in 2031.

But how are these two indicators currently in relation to the countries of the region? As for the public debt, for Albania this year is expected to close at 56.3% of the Gross Domestic Product, at a significantly higher level than the countries of the region, except for Montenegro, a state which foresees a public debt at 61.7%.

While Serbia and Macedonia have lower levels, respectively at 51.4% and 54.6% of GDP. Among the 5 countries of the region, Bosnia-Herzegovina predicts the lowest level of public debt at 29.3% of GDP.

While the general government balance (Fiscal deficit in % of GDP) for 2024 is predicted to close at -2.3% of GDP, leaving behind countries like Macedonia and Mali i Z which predict it at -3.7%, and Kosovo at - 2.9%, but higher than Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia. The average of the region for this indicator is about -2.8%.
